TRP would like to honor the life of Robert Phillips, who passed away on January 21, 2022. Robert Phillips, for whom our annual chapbook contest is named, was an acclaimed writer and former professor at the University of Houston.
He is the author or editor of over thirty volumes of poetry, fiction, and criticism; he has published two works with Texas Review Press, News About People You Know (2002) and Ice House Sketches (2011). His honors include a Pushcart Prize, an American Academy and Institute of Arts Letters Award in Literature, a New York State Council on the Arts CAPS Grant in Poetry, MacDowell Colony and Yaddo Fellowships, a National Public Radio Syndicated Fiction Project Award, a Syracuse University Arents Pioneer Medal, and Texas Institute of Letters membership. From 1991 – 2009 he was a member of the creative writing faculty at the University of Houston, where he was director of the writing program from 1991 – 1996 and received the Outstanding Teacher Award.
